4 Mistakes Not to Make When Packing for Your Office Move to Austin

Office Moving - Office RelocationBoxing up your office sounds like an easy undertaking, doesn't it? Especially if you are a decently uncluttered person, it looks like all you would need to do is place your files in a box, your computer, monitor and mouse in another, load up your office furniture, and you’re done. However, getting your office from here to there is many times quite a bit more time consuming than we tend to think it is. Luckily, dodging these common blunders when it is time to box up your office can save you a decent amount of worry when moving to Austin.

Mistake #1: Not Enough Organization

Whether you are planning to move yourself or have found a moving company to take care of your move, the worst thing you can do when it's time to pack up is start without taking a moment to get appropriately organized. You might think you are organized because you scribbled a lonely item designation on the side of the box, but what you should do is prepare in advance what you need to pack and in what order you need to pack it. After that, you need to distinctly label what is where. Be aware that when you get your boxes loaded up, moved, and to your new office, you're going to forget which box holds your keyboard, and which one contains your pens in it. So, record a list on every box of what's in it to escape digging, stress, and general hysteria while you get unpacked.

Mistake #2: Burying Things You Really Need

If you have ever moved your home, you most likely be familiar with that notion of unboxing the sheets you have not needed in ten years amid unpacking, but not being able to unearth the shampoo and fresh clothes you require for tomorrow morning. An office move can contain a similar problem. That is the reason that you should pack up the things you aren't going to need right away (such as your tax records from six years ago), and make sure they are placed on the truck first. The items you may need quickly (your desk, your computer, your printer, etc.) should all be packed up last so they are the first items you unload off the truck. This process helps negate your work interruption, and aids you to get right back to work once you get to your destination.

Mistake #3: Not Using a Timeline or a Checklist

Moving an office to Austin is something that usually happens incrementally, which is why it is crucial to use the right tools to track your progress. You should have a timeline mapped out to estimate the amount of time it will take to box up your stuff, how long it will take to move it, how long it should take to unpack, and then how long it will take to finish setting up. The timeline must have some time in it for problems, and it must be accompanied by a checklist so you can cross off tasks as they are done. If you plan to hire a professional moving company, they will help you with this process. Winging it is not a very good alternative for an office move.

Mistake #4: Bringing Stuff You Don't Need to Austin

Moving your office is an opportunity to begin again, and to put your best foot forward. But, a lot of people wind up just taking everything with them, whether or not they really need it. That is why, before you start to think about packing, you must go through everything in your office and contemplate if it needs to come to the new location. That broken shredder that you replaced and were keeping on hand in case you might get it fixed? Don't muddle up your new office with it. The pile of old, but still working, cables you kept in the event of an I.T. meltdown? Well, if they are a few years old, they are probably outdated. That ream of musty paper that does not fit your printer? Recycle it or give it to an employee for their kids to draw on. The more items you can dispose of (including digitizing old records so the paper copies are not needed) the easier your move will be.
